What are your main responsibilities within the Office of Career and Professional Development?

I work to connect an organization’s scope of hiring, goals for engagement, companywide initiatives, and interest in engagement opportunities. We then develop a recruitment strategy for engaging WLC talent throughout the year.

I also assist Thad Jahns in overseeing our internship program and work with students who choose to register their internship for academic credit. Many internships are found through Handshake, which is an online job/internship platform, monitored through our office.

Seasonal events, career fairs, professional development workshops, etc. also take time to present students with ongoing options and networking opportunities.

What do you enjoy most about working in the Office of Career and Professional Development and why?

I enjoy the variety in this role. I am passionate about WLC’s mission and serving students looking to take their next step into the professional world and having a part in that preparation for the workforce. I also like connecting employers to our mission and student body. It is very rewarding to see and hear how valuable our students are to organizations!

What advice would you give to students who are just starting to explore internships and/or career options?

I would say that you don’t need to have all the answers or your exact career nailed down. Our Office exists to guide students and present career development opportunities so students can find their best fit without feeling rushed into a decision. It may take an internship, work experiences, classes, etc. to explore.

I would also say hard work, motivation, professionalism, and other intangibles are often more valuable to hiring employers, which is another reason why the WLC liberal arts education is so valuable.
